A casual stroll by Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, through a bustling street market in Shanghai has gone viral after a vendor failed to recognise one of the world’s most influential tech leaders.
The video, widely shared on Chinese social media platforms, shows Huang visiting Jinde Market in the Lujiazui area ahead of the Lunar New Year. Dressed casually, he browsed fruit and snack stalls, interacted with shopkeepers, and blended effortlessly into the crowd—until curious onlookers began taking photos.
In one moment that quickly became the highlight of the clip, Huang handed a traditional Lunar New Year red envelope to a vendor, who appeared confused and asked, “Who’s he?” Only after noticing the crowd gathering did the shop owner realise the visitor was Huang, known in China by his Mandarin name.
During the visit, Huang reportedly bought roasted chestnuts, candied hawthorns and fruit, even sampling produce on the spot. His relaxed manner and low-key presence struck a chord online, with users praising his humility and approachability.
Social media reactions poured in, with several users joking that the fruit stall should advertise itself as “selected by Jensen Huang,” while others called the encounter a refreshing reminder that even global tech icons can move anonymously through everyday life.
Huang, a Taiwanese-American executive and co-founder of Nvidia, was in China as part of a routine visit ahead of the Lunar New Year, during which he also met employees and held discussions with officials. The viral moment, however, offered a rare glimpse of a tech billionaire away from boardrooms and headlines—simply another shopper in a neighbourhood market.
