A tragic chain of events unfolded in Greater Noida after a 27-year-old software engineer remained stranded atop his submerged car for nearly 90 minutes before it sank into a water-filled pit, highlighting serious lapses in rescue preparedness and site safety.
The victim, Yuvraj Mehta, was returning home to Sector 150 late at night when his car veered off the road amid dense winter fog. The vehicle breached a roadside drain and plunged into a nearly 50-foot-deep pit filled with rainwater at an under-construction site. Investigators later said the area lacked barricades, reflectors, or adequate warning signs.
Despite the impact, Mehta managed to climb onto the roof of his car and called his family for help. According to officials, he remained visible for over an hour as rescue efforts struggled to gain momentum.
Emergency teams from multiple departments eventually reached the scene, but low visibility, darkness, and logistical limitations hampered operations. Ropes thrown into the pit failed to reach him, while cranes and ladders deployed at the site fell short of bridging the depth and distance.
As time passed, the car gradually sank, leaving Mehta with no support. His body was later recovered using a boat after the vehicle disappeared beneath the surface.
Authorities said dense fog may have caused the driver to misjudge a turn, with speed and near-zero visibility emerging as contributing factors. Although streetlights were present in the area, fog significantly reduced visibility at the time of the accident.
Following public outrage, a case has been registered against two real estate firms linked to the plot. Both companies have denied responsibility, citing ownership transfers and lack of construction permissions. The Noida Authority has since issued show-cause notices to officials overseeing traffic safety in the area, while disciplinary action has been taken against a junior engineer.
The incident has renewed scrutiny over safety compliance at construction sites and the readiness of emergency response systems, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
