Hotel Huddle, ‘Bargain’ Claims and a ‘Jail’ Jibe: What’s Fueling the Mumbai Mayor Power Struggle

Hotel huddles, bargaining claims and sharp jibes dominate the Mumbai mayor race as the ruling alliance scrapes past the BMC majority mark.

Hotel Huddle, ‘Bargain’ Claims and a ‘Jail’ Jibe: What’s Fueling the Mumbai Mayor Power Struggle

The battle for the Mumbai mayor’s post has reignited familiar scenes of Maharashtra politics—hotel huddles, razor-thin numbers and sharp exchanges—after the ruling alliance edged past the majority mark in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

At the centre of the churn is Eknath Shinde, who met his party’s newly elected corporators at a Bandra hotel on Sunday night. Projecting confidence, Shinde said Mumbai would have a mayor from the ruling alliance, adding that neighbouring civic bodies were also likely to follow the same trajectory.

Why the hotel move?

The Shiv Sena faction led by Shinde maintains that the three-day stay is an orientation for first-time corporators—many of the 29 are new—before formal registration with the Konkan divisional commissioner. The opposition, however, remains sceptical, arguing that the move is aimed at preventing last-minute poaching ahead of the mayoral vote.

The numbers underline the tension. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats in the 227-member House, while Shinde’s Sena added 29, taking the alliance tally to 118—just four seats above the majority mark. With margins this slim, even minor defections could complicate the outcome.

‘Bargaining’ charge and the ‘jail’ jibe

The opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) alleges the hotel huddle masks bargaining with the BJP over the mayor’s chair. The rhetoric escalated with jibes describing the hotel as a “jail” for corporators, a charge Shinde rejected, insisting his camp is secure and suggesting rivals could face surprises on voting day.

The mayor math

Formally, the mayor is elected by corporators, with the ruling side deciding who occupies the chair. While the alliance crosses the threshold, the narrow cushion keeps nerves frayed. Opposition leaders argue that a hypothetical united front could still make the contest unpredictable, even if arithmetic currently favours the ruling side.

Within the BJP, there is quiet introspection after falling short of a standalone majority. Party insiders cite coordination issues, candidate selection and messaging as factors that shaped the final tally.

Keeping speculation alive

Opposition chief Uddhav Thackeray has kept speculation simmering with remarks suggesting possibilities remain open, prompting counter-quips from Devendra Fadnavis. For now, guarded corporators and tight arithmetic define the race for the city’s top civic post.
