Strong 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Leh–Ladakh, Authorities Issue Advisory

A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Leh–Ladakh region on Monday morning, triggering precautionary advisories from authorities as the situation continues to be closely monitored.

According to official seismic data, the tremor occurred at 11:51 am with its epicentre located in the Leh–Ladakh region. The quake originated at a depth of 171 kilometres, placing it within the seismically active Himalayan belt.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said, adding that emergency agencies remain on alert in case of aftershocks. Residents in surrounding areas reported feeling brief tremors, though no major disruption was recorded.

Authorities have advised people to remain cautious and follow standard safety protocols, especially in vulnerable mountainous zones. Emergency response teams have been asked to maintain readiness as a precautionary measure.

The earthquake comes amid heightened seismic activity in the broader region. A day earlier, a moderate tremor was recorded in neighbouring Afghanistan, following a series of quakes reported there over the past week.

Experts note that while deeper earthquakes generally cause less surface damage than shallow ones, continued seismic movement in the Himalayan region underscores the importance of preparedness and monitoring.

The Himalayan belt is among the most earthquake-prone zones in the world due to ongoing tectonic plate movements, making periodic tremors a recurring concern for northern India and nearby regions.
