Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said artificial intelligence (AI) can benefit humanity only if it is developed in the “right direction” and made accessible to all. Addressing the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, he called for global cooperation to ensure AI serves as a common good.
The summit, being held in the national capital, has brought together world leaders, technology executives and policymakers to discuss the future of AI governance and innovation.
AI as a Transformative Force
Prime Minister Modi described AI as a historic transformation comparable to earlier technological revolutions. He said that unlike past innovations, the pace and scale of AI development are unprecedented.
“Earlier, the impact of technology took decades to become visible. Today, the journey from machine learning to learning machines is faster, deeper and wider than ever,” he said.
He stressed that AI should not merely make machines smarter but should expand human capabilities. According to him, the key question is not what AI can do in the future, but how humans choose to use it today.
Call for Democratisation
The Prime Minister emphasised that AI must be democratised. He said technology should not reduce humans to data points but instead become a tool for inclusion and empowerment, especially in the Global South.
“AI will be beneficial for all only when it is shared by all, when code is open for all,” he said.
He added that AI needs “an open sky” for innovation while ensuring that humans remain in control. Comparing it to GPS navigation, he said technology may guide the way, but the final decision must rest with people.
Global Standards and Trust
Prime Minister Modi called on global leaders to work together to establish international standards for AI development. He urged countries to pledge to treat AI as a “global common good.”
Raising concerns over deepfakes and fabricated digital content, he said authenticity labels and watermarking standards are necessary to maintain trust. According to him, trust must be built into AI systems from the beginning.
Focus on Skills and Future Generations
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of skilling, reskilling and lifelong learning to prepare societies for an AI-driven future. He said the future of work must remain inclusive, trusted and human-centric.
He added that leaders must consider what kind of AI systems they are passing on to future generations, underscoring the responsibility that comes with rapid technological advancement.
At the summit, Modi reiterated that India views AI through the lens of “welfare and happiness for all” and sees it as an opportunity rather than a threat.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026 continues to host discussions on innovation, regulation and inclusive growth as global stakeholders debate the future direction of artificial intelligence.
