India marked its 77th Republic Day with a grand ceremonial parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi on Monday, celebrating the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram” while highlighting the nation’s cultural heritage, defence preparedness, and technological progress. The event, which began at 10:30 am and lasted around 90 minutes, drew large crowds and featured an elaborate display of tableaux, marching contingents, and a powerful military flypast.

President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag amid a 21-gun salute as the national anthem played, formally opening the celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with senior defence officials, began the day by paying tribute at the National War Memorial, honouring soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

A key highlight of the parade was the conferral of the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla. The astronaut and fighter pilot was honoured for his role in India’s historic space mission, becoming the first Indian to visit the International Space Station and only the second Indian to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma.

The parade showcased 30 tableaux, including 17 from states and union territories and 13 from ministries and departments, moving under the themes ‘Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram’ and ‘Samriddhi ka Mantra: Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. These displays reflected India’s journey from the freedom movement to a self-reliant nation, blending tradition with modern achievements.

Special attention was drawn to defence capabilities, with newly inducted and battle-tested equipment on display. Mock-ups of weapon systems deployed during Operation Sindoor, along with the Suryastra rocket launcher system, the Bhairav light commando battalion, and advanced missile platforms such as BrahMos and Akash, underscored India’s growing military strength. Apache helicopters and fighter aircraft added grandeur with a flypast that thrilled spectators lining Kartavya Path.

Cultural elements were woven throughout the parade, including large reproductions of historic paintings depicting the verses of Vande Mataram, written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875. These visual installations paid tribute to the national song’s role in uniting Indians during the freedom struggle.

This year’s celebrations also carried strong international symbolism. The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council Antonio Costa attended as chief guests, reflecting India’s expanding global partnerships. Leaders from across the political spectrum, including Rahul Gandhi, extended Republic Day greetings, emphasising the Constitution as the foundation of India’s democracy.

Security was tightened nationwide, particularly in sensitive regions, to ensure smooth celebrations. Across states, governors unfurled the tricolour and local parades and award ceremonies honoured outstanding service in various fields.

As India commemorated the day it adopted its Constitution on January 26, 1950, the Republic Day 2026 parade stood as a powerful reminder of the country’s democratic ideals, cultural diversity, and resolve to safeguard its sovereignty while moving confidently toward the future.
