Shashi Tharoor Stays Silent on CPI(M) Rumours During Dubai Visit
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has declined to comment on reports claiming that he held discussions with individuals linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) while in Dubai, saying it would be inappropriate to address such political matters while overseas.
Tharoor, who represents Thiruvananthapuram in Parliament, is currently in Dubai attending a literature festival. When approached by reporters on Sunday, he said he became aware of the reports during his flight and chose not to respond publicly.
“I saw the reports while travelling, but it would not be appropriate to comment on these issues while being in a foreign country,” he said.
Speculation Around Party Shift Gains Traction
The reports triggered fresh speculation about Tharoor’s political future, particularly amid ongoing murmurs within Kerala’s political circles. The buzz intensified after claims emerged that the senior Congress leader was dissatisfied over not being adequately acknowledged by Rahul Gandhi at a recent event in Kochi, along with allegations of attempts by state party leaders to sideline him.
While no official confirmation has surfaced, the timing of the reports and Tharoor’s growing distance from internal party debates have fueled discussion about possible realignments ahead of crucial electoral cycles.
☕ Nation With Tea Take:
In Indian politics, silence is rarely neutral—it’s often strategic.
Left Front Responds, Denies Any Talks
The speculation was swiftly addressed by the Left Democratic Front. T. P. Ramakrishnan, convener of the LDF, categorically denied any discussions with Tharoor.
However, he added a politically loaded caveat:
The LDF and CPI(M), he said, remain open to individuals, groups, or parties that are willing to accept the Left Front’s political position.
That statement, while dismissing the immediate claim, has only added another layer to the political guessing game.
A Familiar Pattern in Indian Politics
Party-switch speculation around senior leaders is not new in Indian politics. As ideological lines blur and electoral arithmetic dominates decision-making, individual stature often becomes a bargaining chip across parties.
Tharoor—an internationally recognised author, diplomat-turned-politician, and one of Congress’s most articulate voices—occupies a unique space that naturally attracts political curiosity beyond party boundaries.

In India, rumours travel faster than manifestos—and clarifications come slower than election promises.
What Lies Ahead
For now, Tharoor has chosen restraint over reaction. Whether the reports fade away or evolve into something more concrete will depend on developments back home, not abroad.
One thing is clear:
In today’s political climate, even silence becomes a headline.
