One person was killed and at least 16 others were injured after a speeding luxury car crashed into roadside food stalls in a busy area of Jaipur, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place near Kharbas Circle under the Patrakar Colony police station limits on Friday night. According to officials, an Audi car, allegedly being driven at high speed and racing another vehicle, first hit a road divider before ploughing into multiple food stalls crowded with people.

Station House Officer Madan Kadwasra said over 50 people were present at the spot when the car lost control. “The vehicle hit more than 10 stalls, ran over at least 16 people, and finally stopped after crashing into a tree around 100 metres away. Another car also overturned due to the impact,” he said.

The deceased was identified as Ramesh Bairwa, a resident of Bhilwara, who worked as a helper at one of the stalls. Four injured victims were referred to SMS Hospital in critical condition, while others were admitted to Jaipuria Hospital. Three people were discharged after first aid.

Police identified the Audi driver as Dinesh Rinwa, a businessman, who allegedly fled the scene along with two others, abandoning the car. One of the occupants was caught by locals and handed over to police. The accused were reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident. The vehicle has been seized and mobile phones recovered.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed grief over the incident and directed authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar visited the hospitals and instructed doctors to provide timely and best possible care. Police have registered a case and launched a search to arrest the absconding accused.
