Steve Smith Reacts to T20 World Cup Snub Despite Red-Hot BBL Form: ‘That Ship Has Sailed’

Australian batter Steve Smith has finally addressed his exclusion from Australia’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, admitting that the opportunity may have passed despite his sensational run in the Big Bash League.

The 36-year-old has been in outstanding form for the Sydney Sixers, recently smashing his fourth Big Bash century before following it up with a crucial half-century in a must-win clash at Brisbane. His performances have placed him among the tournament’s standout batters this season.

However, Smith acknowledged that Australia’s current opening combination has left little room for change.

“I always want to play for Australia in major tournaments, but I think that ship has sailed for this World Cup,” Smith said. “They’ve got two openers who are doing really well. I’m relaxed, enjoying my cricket and doing what I can here.”

Olympics now the bigger goal

While the T20 World Cup door appears closed, Smith revealed that his long-term focus has shifted toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to make a return.

“My main goal is to be around when the Olympics come along. That would be pretty special,” he said. “I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and see where it leads.”

Notably, Smith was also overlooked for Australia’s T20I series against Pakistan scheduled ahead of the World Cup, underlining the selectors’ commitment to a settled top order.

Selectors leave the door slightly open

Australia’s selection panel has maintained that Smith remains in consideration should unforeseen circumstances arise. Chief selector George Bailey said Smith’s form cannot be ignored.

“He’s playing at a level above in the Big Bash,” Bailey said, adding that while Australia has strong coverage in Smith’s preferred position, his adaptability keeps him in the broader conversation if changes become necessary.

Australia’s World Cup campaign

Australia, champions in 2021, have been placed in Group B for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. They are grouped alongside Sri Lanka, Ireland, Oman and Zimbabwe, and will open their campaign against Ireland in Colombo.

Despite missing out, Smith’s resurgence in T20 cricket has reignited debate around experience versus continuity — even as he appears content to let performances, rather than selections, do the talking.
