A Pongal release decision by a Tamil Nadu theatre has triggered controversy after the management alleged harassment by fans of Vijay. Vasu Cinemas in Kumbakonam claimed it faced “abuse, vulgarity and curses” on social media for choosing Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, over Vijay’s Jana Nayagan for the festive weekend.
What the theatre said
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the theatre said it opted to screen Parasakthi “for several reasons,” adding that the decision does not reflect disrespect toward Vijay. The management noted it has screened most Vijay films over the past 15 years, with a few exceptions.
The post claimed the backlash crossed the line: comments allegedly included harassment and personal attacks that “seriously disturbed our mental peace.” Appealing for restraint, the theatre urged fans to celebrate cinema without hostility, calling Vijay “not just a star, but a remarkable human being.”
Fans react
Some Vijay fans defended their stance online, arguing that theatres should prioritise Jana Nayagan—widely billed as Vijay’s final film before politics—especially given his role in drawing audiences back post-COVID. Others said they would boycott the theatre for the choice.
The Pongal clash
-
Jana Nayagan (directed by H Vinoth) releases on January 9 and is Vijay’s last film before entering politics with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
-
Parasakthi (directed by Sudha Kongara) releases on January 10, starring Sivakarthikeyan alongside Sreeleela and Ravi Mohan.
The episode has reignited debate over fan culture, freedom of exhibition, and whether theatres should face pressure over programming choices during big festival clashes.
