Wasim Akram Reveals Ex-Pakistan Teammates Tried to Blame Him After World Cup Loss to India

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has made a startling revelation about the aftermath of Pakistan’s defeat to India in the 1996 Cricket World Cup, claiming that some of his own teammates attempted to shift blame onto him after the loss.

Speaking candidly about the long-standing controversy surrounding his absence from the quarterfinal against India in Bengaluru, Akram said the narrative that he deliberately skipped the match did not emerge organically, but was fueled from within the team itself.

Injury, not avoidance

Akram reiterated that he was ruled out due to a serious abdominal muscle injury sustained during Pakistan’s previous match against New Zealand. Despite taking multiple injections on match day and undergoing intensive treatment, he said he was medically unfit to bowl.

He added that the injury required weeks of recovery and made it impossible for him to perform at international level, particularly in a high-pressure knockout clash against arch-rivals India.

‘Let’s put the blame on him’

For the first time, Akram disclosed that he overheard a conversation involving senior players from the squad on the eve of the match, where they discussed deflecting responsibility for the defeat onto him.

According to Akram, fear of public backlash and accountability after the loss led to internal finger-pointing, which eventually snowballed into decades of suspicion and criticism directed at him.

Decades of scrutiny

The former fast-bowling great described the episode as deeply hurtful, noting that despite representing Pakistan in multiple World Cup clashes against India, his commitment was repeatedly questioned.

He stressed that walking away from a World Cup match against India—especially as captain—was unthinkable, calling such allegations illogical and damaging.

A lasting scar in cricket history

The India–Pakistan World Cup rivalry has produced many iconic moments, but Akram’s absence from the 1996 quarterfinal remains one of its most debated chapters. His latest remarks shed new light on the internal dynamics of the Pakistan team during that period and highlight how off-field narratives can overshadow on-field legacies.
