A political controversy erupted at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 after members of the Indian Youth Congress staged a shirtless protest inside the venue in New Delhi.
The protest took place at Bharat Mandapam, where global leaders, technology executives and policymakers had gathered for high-level discussions on artificial intelligence governance and innovation.
Protest and Detentions
According to reports, Youth Congress members removed their shirts as a symbolic protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a statement shared on social media, the organisation accused the government of compromising national interests during the summit. Delhi Police personnel present at the venue detained at least four protesters. Officials indicated that legal action has been initiated.
Political War of Words
The protest triggered sharp reactions from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari described the demonstration as disruptive and inappropriate at an international platform, and demanded an apology from the Congress.
On the other hand, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera criticised Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and questioned the government’s handling of the summit.
The exchange marked a fresh round of political confrontation amid an event designed to project India’s growing global role in artificial intelligence.
Summit Continues Amid Tensions
Despite the protest, the AI Impact Summit continued as scheduled. The event has drawn participation from global technology leaders and heads of state.
French President Emmanuel Macron concluded his India visit during the summit, while leaders from Bhutan and other nations highlighted India’s emerging role in AI governance.
Discussions at the summit have focused on artificial intelligence regulation, semiconductor supply chains, digital infrastructure, and India’s ambition to become a major AI innovation hub.
Organisers have emphasised global cooperation, ethical AI development and balanced regulatory frameworks as key outcomes of the five-day event.
