Influencer and reservation-reform activist Ajeet Bharti has been booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act over alleged casteist and objectionable remarks made about Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad during a YouTube broadcast.
The FIR was registered at Delhi’s North Avenue police station following a complaint by a member of Azad’s party. The complaint relates to Bharti’s August 22 programme, during which he allegedly used caste-related and abusive language while responding to a viewer’s comment.
The case also includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The complaint reportedly alleges caste-based remarks, abusive comments and sexually degrading language directed at women.
Bharti has denied making casteist remarks against Azad and described the FIR as “pressure-driven”. He said his response during the broadcast followed what he called a provocative and vulgar comment involving his family.
Bharti has said he will cooperate with the police investigation but claimed the case would not withstand judicial scrutiny. There was no immediate response from the police or the complainant’s side to his allegation of pressure.
The FIR has created a fresh legal and political controversy amid the wider debate over reservation reforms. The allegations against Bharti will now be examined during the investigation, while any criminal liability will ultimately be determined by the courts.
