Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando have been fined 25% of their match fees by the ICC following their heated altercation during the second India vs Sri Lanka Test in Colombo. Both players also received one demerit point each.
The incident occurred on Day 1 after Sri Lankan pacer Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45. Fernando’s animated send-off prompted the Indian opener to turn back and exchange words with him. The confrontation escalated briefly, with the two players making physical contact before teammates and officials intervened.
Both were found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to inappropriate physical contact with another player or match official.
Jaiswal and Fernando admitted the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, meaning no formal hearing was required. Neither player had committed a disciplinary offence in the previous 24 months.
The clash came during an eventful Test in Colombo. India recovered from early setbacks, with Devdutt Padikkal scoring 117 and helping the visitors build a strong first-innings total. India eventually reached 475/8 before rain interrupted play.
The ICC’s decision formally closes the disciplinary matter, with both Jaiswal and Fernando now carrying one demerit point from the Colombo Test.
