Amit Shah Calls for India to Lead Global Lab-Grown Diamond Market
Amit Shah urged Indian firms to control the entire lab-grown diamond ecosystem and build globally recognised Indian brands as the market expands.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has urged India’s gems and jewellery industry to take full control of the lab-grown diamond ecosystem and build Indian brands with a global presence. Speaking at the 52nd India Gem & Jewellery Awards in Mumbai, Shah said the lab-grown diamond market could grow nearly 50 times its current volume, creating a major opportunity for India.
Shah stressed that Indian companies should control every stage of the business, from manufacturing machinery and producing diamonds to jewellery-making, branding and establishing showrooms worldwide. He said the Centre would introduce a policy for the sector, while Gujarat and Maharashtra were also working on supportive measures.
Highlighting India’s existing strength in the diamond industry, Shah said Surat handles around 90 per cent of global diamond cutting and processing, while Mumbai remains a key centre for exports. India’s gems and jewellery exports stood at Rs 2.44 lakh crore in 2025, accounting for 6.3 per cent of merchandise exports and supporting nearly 75 lakh jobs.
He also highlighted initiatives such as the Bharat Ratnam mega common facility centre and the proposed India Jewellery Park. Shah said India should become a leading global hub for both conventional and lab-grown diamonds, with Indian brands driving international trade.
