The BCCI has explained why the Indian women’s cricket team did not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council president Mohsin Naqvi after defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the decision reflected India’s current position regarding Pakistan and the unresolved matter of the men’s Asia Cup trophy.
Saikia said the board did not want the women’s team to accept the trophy from an individual who is currently not acceptable to India. He also stressed that the decision was linked to the BCCI’s stance on the men’s Asia Cup title from 2025, when India won the tournament but reportedly did not receive the trophy.
According to Saikia, the BCCI had suggested that the ACC deputy chairman present the trophy instead, an arrangement it believed could have prevented the controversy. The request was not accepted, and the Indian players proceeded with their celebrations and medal ceremony without the official trophy presentation.
Saikia said the BCCI wanted to remain consistent with its position and show solidarity with the men’s team while the trophy issue remains unresolved. He added that the situation reflects the wider tensions surrounding India-Pakistan relations.
The latest incident has once again placed cricket’s India-Pakistan relationship under scrutiny. While India continues to compete in multinational tournaments involving Pakistan, the BCCI maintains its position against bilateral cricket between the two countries.
