Bheem Moon Habitat: Can India Build a House on the Moon?
India’s Bheem concept envisions a modular lunar habitat, but turning the design into a real Moon base will require advanced life-support, robotics, resource utilisation and transportation systems.
India’s Bheem concept explores how a future lunar habitat could be transported in a compact form and assembled on the Moon. Developed by researchers at IISc Bengaluru, including Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the Bhartiya Extraterrestrial Expandable Modular Habitat is designed around modular panels that could expand as lunar missions grow.
The concept addresses a key challenge of lunar settlement: launch volume. Instead of transporting a complete rigid structure, compact modules could be carried by spacecraft and assembled after landing. However, turning the concept into a working habitat would require far more than the structure itself.
A lunar base would need reliable life-support systems, power, water recycling, radiation protection and thermal management. Future missions could also use lunar regolith for construction or shielding, reducing the amount of material transported from Earth. Technologies for extracting resources such as water would be equally important.
Robotic systems would likely need to collect and process lunar soil, manufacture materials and assemble habitat components before astronauts arrive. India would also require heavy-lift rockets, lunar landers and deep-space transportation capabilities to support such missions.
Bheem remains a conceptual design rather than an approved lunar construction project. Its development would require extensive testing, funding and integrated demonstrations on Earth and in space. The concept nevertheless marks an early step toward thinking about not just reaching the Moon, but building the infrastructure needed to live there.
