Kylian Mbappe has addressed the viral AI-generated memes portraying him as a dictator, saying he can understand the humour behind some of them but feels certain comparisons go too far. The Real Madrid forward questioned the historical awareness involved in linking him with figures associated with violence, repression and mass suffering.
The memes gained widespread attention during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, showing Mbappe in military outfits, on a throne and alongside controversial historical leaders. Mbappe said some of the content is clearly intended as harmless football banter, but argued that comparisons with people responsible for immense suffering make the trend uncomfortable.
The France captain's comments come after an outstanding year on the pitch. He scored 10 goals at the 2026 World Cup, won the Golden Boot and Bronze Ball, and moved past Lionel Messi to become the tournament's leading scorer with 22 goals. His strong form has continued at Real Madrid, where he has scored four times in his first four La Liga appearances and also opened his Champions League account against Inter Milan.
Mbappe also discussed the nickname “Mobut”, used jokingly by France teammate Ousmane Dembele. He said that reference was different because it was simply a joke between teammates.
For Mbappe, the issue ultimately comes down to context, intent and the historical figures being referenced.
