Morocco Election Tests Youth Trust as World Cup Spending Looms
Morocco’s parliamentary election comes amid youth frustration over jobs and living costs as the country prepares for major World Cup-related investment.
Moroccans voted on Wednesday in parliamentary elections that will determine the 395-member House of Representatives and shape the country’s next government. The election comes as Morocco prepares for major investments linked to co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while young people continue to raise concerns about jobs, wages and public services.
Official figures show that 15.8 million people are registered to vote, with 7,288 candidates contesting the 395 seats. Young voters aged 18 to 24 account for only 4% of those registered, while people aged 60 and above make up more than 29%.
Youth unemployment and dissatisfaction over education, healthcare, housing and living costs have become major issues ahead of the vote. Recent youth-led protests have also highlighted concerns about whether economic growth and large infrastructure projects are translating into better everyday opportunities.
The next government will oversee a major investment programme as Morocco prepares for the 2030 World Cup. Reuters reported that around $20 billion is being directed towards preparations and related projects.
Under Morocco’s constitutional system, the king appoints the head of government from the party that wins the most seats. With no party expected to secure an outright majority, coalition negotiations will be important after the results.
The election therefore brings two priorities into focus: managing major national investment while responding to demands from citizens, particularly younger Moroccans, for jobs and improved public services.
