Sri Lanka Economy Grows 4.2% as IMF Flags Global Risks
Sri Lanka’s economy expanded 4.2 per cent in Q2 2026, while the IMF warned about inflation, global uncertainty, oil shocks and the need for continued reforms.
Sri Lanka’s economy grew 4.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, marking the 11th consecutive quarter of strong economic expansion, according to the International Monetary Fund. The IMF said the economy has remained resilient despite fresh shocks, including the impact of higher global oil prices.
Headline inflation rose to 8 per cent year-on-year in August because of the global oil price shock, although inflation expectations remained broadly anchored. Gross official reserves also increased to $6.9 billion by the end of August, while the banking sector remained well capitalised and profitable.
The IMF warned that Sri Lanka continues to face risks from the conflict in West Asia, uncertainty surrounding global trade policies and potential climate-related effects linked to El Nino. It said maintaining macroeconomic stability would require continued reforms, prudent fiscal policies and efforts to rebuild fiscal and external buffers.
The Fund also called for a medium-term revenue strategy to strengthen tax collection while improving the fairness and efficiency of the tax system. It recommended broadening the tax base, reviewing tax exemptions and maintaining the 5 per cent inflation target.
During its mission, the IMF team also visited Jaffna and identified opportunities for investment in agriculture, fisheries, tourism, renewable energy, connectivity and skills. It stressed the need for stronger social protection so that economic gains reach vulnerable sections of society.
Sri Lanka’s recovery is showing momentum, but the IMF’s message is clear: the economic comeback still needs careful handling.
