Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticised Western sanctions against Moscow, saying Russia has faced more than 30,000 restrictions and arguing that its economy has continued to outperform global growth despite the pressure. Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi, Putin accused Western countries of using sanctions and other measures to protect their economic interests.

Putin said Russia’s economy had undergone major structural changes in recent years and had become more adaptable and resilient. He also claimed that competition between BRICS and Western economies was becoming increasingly confrontational, citing restrictions on trade, transport routes and maritime activity.

His comments followed the passage of new US legislation targeting Russian officials, wealthy individuals, financial institutions and the so-called shadow fleet, while also expanding sanctions on Iran.

Putin’s remarks came after his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. The two leaders discussed energy, defence, bilateral ties and the impact of conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea on maritime trade and Indian seafarers.

Energy remains a major part of India-Russia relations, with India continuing to purchase Russian crude despite Western pressure. The two countries are also seeking to expand trade and have set a target of reaching $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
