Rajasthan Local Polls: BJP Wins, but Setbacks Expose Urban Challenges
BJP emerged as Rajasthan’s largest party in urban polls, but setbacks in key cities and strong performances by Independents and smaller parties highlighted a fragmented verdict.
The BJP emerged as the largest party in Rajasthan’s 2026 urban local body elections, winning 4,179 of 10,235 declared wards, compared with 3,613 for the Congress. However, the results also showed closely contested races and setbacks in several areas traditionally associated with the BJP.
The BJP’s share of declared wards rose to 40.8% from 35.7% in the 2019-21 cycle, while Congress fell from 40.7% to 35.3%. Independents won 2,273 wards, or 22.2%, broadly similar to their 22.4% share previously. Delimitation added 2,770 wards, making direct comparisons more difficult.
The BJP failed to secure majorities in several politically significant urban centres. In Bharatpur, Independents won 36 of 65 wards, while the BJP secured 20 and Congress seven. In Pali, Congress won 29 wards against BJP’s 21, while Jhalawar saw Congress take 29 of 45 wards. Ajmer also produced a Congress lead, with 37 wards against BJP’s 32.
Bikaner was another setback, with Congress winning 42 of 80 wards. The city had seen mobilisation by Shri Rajput Karni Sena over the UGC’s 2026 caste-equity regulations, although the BJP disputed claims that the campaign drove its performance.
Local issues such as roads, drainage, garbage, waterlogging, candidate selection and factionalism also shaped the contests. Smaller parties, including AAP, RLP and CPI(M), along with Independents, gained ground in several pockets, indicating that dissatisfaction did not uniformly translate into Congress gains.
