US military bomber flyovers during high-profile meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have drawn attention to the role of military symbolism in US diplomacy.
When Putin visited Alaska in August 2025, a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and F-35 fighters featured in the welcome ceremony. The summit focused on the Russia-Ukraine war and ended without a ceasefire agreement. Reuters reported that Putin secured some diplomatic gains but did not obtain the broader economic reset Moscow sought.
During Xi’s September 2026 state visit to Washington, B-1B Lancers flew over his arrival ceremony at Joint Base Andrews. A B-2 Spirit accompanied by four F-22 Raptors also featured in the military spectacle during his visit. The flyovers were part of elaborate ceremonial events surrounding Xi’s first US state visit in 11 years.
The aircraft themselves represent different elements of American airpower. The B-1B is a long-range bomber designed primarily for conventional missions, while the B-2 is a stealth bomber built to penetrate heavily defended airspace. The F-22 is an advanced air-superiority fighter.
Whether the flyovers were intended as deliberate strategic messaging is less certain. Analysts have previously interpreted military displays around diplomatic meetings as demonstrations of capability, but the events were also part of formal ceremonies.
With Trump and Xi discussing trade, technology, Taiwan and broader security issues, the aircraft overhead added another layer of symbolism to an already highly choreographed diplomatic encounter. Basically, when Washington wants to make an entrance, sometimes the guest list includes bombers.
