Xi Jinping to Meet Trump in Washington: Trade, AI and Rare Earths on Agenda

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit Washington next week for talks with US President Donald Trump, with trade, artificial intelligence and rare earth minerals expected to dominate the agenda. The visit will be Xi’s first state visit to the United States in more than a decade.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, are scheduled to attend a formal arrival ceremony, a state dinner and other events during the visit. Trump is also expected to personally welcome Xi at Joint Base Andrews, an unusual protocol move for a visiting foreign leader.
The economic discussions are expected to include the possibility of easing tariffs on a limited range of non-strategic goods. However, US officials have indicated that Washington is not expected to offer concessions on export controls in exchange for increased Chinese supplies of rare earth minerals, which are essential to many technology and industrial products.
Artificial intelligence will also feature prominently, with the two countries navigating competition over advanced AI technology and related risks. Ahead of the summit, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York to discuss AI, trade, rare earths and other economic issues.
The White House state dinner is expected to include several major technology leaders, including Sundar Pichai, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman and Tim Cook.
The summit comes as Washington and Beijing continue trying to manage disputes over trade, technology and critical minerals. Basically, the guest list says Silicon Valley, while the agenda says geopolitics.
