CBSE Board Exam 2026: Key Changes Explained

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced several changes for the CBSE Board Exam 2026 for Classes 10 and 12. The revised rules will come into effect from this academic session and are aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The Class 10 and Class 12 board exams will begin on February 17, 2026. Nearly 46 lakh students from India and 26 other countries are expected to appear. The Class 10 exams will conclude on March 11, while the Class 12 exams will continue until April 10.

Here are the key changes introduced this year:

Two Board Exams for Class 10

From 2026 onwards, CBSE will conduct two board exams for Class 10 students.

The first examination will take place in February–March. The second exam will begin on May 15 and will run for 15 days.

Students who pass the first exam will be allowed to improve their scores in up to three subjects — Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages. This move aims to reduce exam pressure and offer students an opportunity to perform better.

Section-wise Question Papers in Class 10

CBSE has restructured the question papers for Class 10 Science and Social Science.

Science will include separate sections for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Social Science will include History, Geography, Political Science and Economics.

Students will be required to answer subject-wise sections separately. Evaluation will also be conducted by subject-specific teachers to improve accuracy and quality of assessment.

On-Screen Marking for Class 12

For Class 12 answer sheets, CBSE has introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM).

Under this system, answer copies will be evaluated digitally. Teachers of Classes 10 and 12 will be assigned for this evaluation process. The board will conduct training sessions for evaluators before the assessment begins.

The aim is to ensure faster and more transparent evaluation of answer books.

Measures for Error-Free Evaluation

CBSE has also updated its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in line with the new evaluation system.

Key steps include:

  • Fewer answer sheets per evaluator to ensure better quality checking

  • Capacity-building programmes for teachers

  • Short instructional videos to guide evaluators

  • A shorter evaluation window of 8–10 days instead of the earlier 10–12 days

These changes are expected to speed up result processing while maintaining accuracy.

Focus on NEP 2020 Implementation

The reforms are part of CBSE’s broader effort to implement recommendations under NEP 2020. The policy encourages flexibility, competency-based learning and reduced exam stress.

By introducing two board exams and improving evaluation methods, the board aims to make assessments more student-friendly and efficient.

Students appearing for the CBSE Board Exam 2026 are advised to check the official CBSE website for detailed subject-wise guidelines, exam schedules and other updates.
