A tragic fire broke out during New Year celebrations at a crowded bar in the Swiss mountain town of Crans-Montana, leaving dozens of people feared dead and many others injured. The incident happened in the early hours of January 1, when celebrations were at their peak.
The fire occurred at a bar called Le Constellation, which was filled with people welcoming the New Year. Officials believe that “several dozen” people may have lost their lives, while around 100 people were injured. Many of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities said it is too early to confirm the exact cause of the fire. However, investigators have ruled out any deliberate attack. The area has been sealed off for safety reasons, and airspace over the town has been temporarily restricted to allow emergency operations.
Crans-Montana is a famous international ski resort located in the Swiss Alps, and attracts tourists from many countries, especially during the winter holiday season. Because of this, victims are believed to include people from different nationalities.
Emergency services rushed to the scene as soon as the fire was reported. Ambulances and helicopters were used to transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Due to the high number of victims, medical facilities in the region were quickly stretched to full capacity.
Local authorities have set up a help centre and emergency helpline to assist families searching for missing relatives. Residents described how celebrations quickly turned into silence and shock as sirens filled the streets.
Investigations are ongoing to understand how the fire started and whether safety rules were followed. Officials have said more details will be shared after a full assessment.
The tragedy has deeply affected the town and has cast a shadow over New Year celebrations across Switzerland.
