Four Important Vaccines Adults Over 60 Should Consider This Flu Season

Adults over 60 face a higher risk of serious complications from influenza and other infectious diseases, making timely vaccination an important part of preventive healthcare. Doctors recommend that older adults, particularly those with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or lung disease, discuss four key vaccines with their healthcare providers this flu season.

The annual influenza vaccine is considered essential because flu infections can lead to severe illness, hospitalisation and other complications in older people. A dose is generally recommended every year, preferably before the flu season.

The pneumococcal vaccine offers protection against serious infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, including pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections. A single PCV20 dose may be preferred where appropriate, while alternative vaccination schedules may be used depending on availability and medical advice.

Adults who have not received Tdap vaccination in adulthood should also consider protection against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Immunity can decline over time, and doctors generally recommend Td or Tdap booster doses at regular intervals.

Updated COVID-19 boosters may also remain important for older adults and people with underlying health conditions, depending on current national health guidance.

The focus of these vaccines is not necessarily to prevent every infection but to reduce the risk of severe disease and hospitalisation. Adults over 60 should consult a qualified doctor to determine the vaccines and schedules best suited to their age, medical history and individual risk factors.
