A small town in Australia’s New South Wales was placed under lockdown on Thursday after a shooting left at least three people dead and another critically injured, triggering a large-scale police operation as the suspected gunman remained at large.
The incident occurred in Lake Cargelligo, a rural town with a population of around 1,500, when emergency services received multiple distress calls reporting gunfire near Walker Street shortly after 4:40 pm local time. Authorities confirmed that two women and one man were killed in the attack, while a fourth victim was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
New South Wales Police Force said officers from the Central West Police District were immediately deployed to the scene, establishing multiple crime scenes and urging residents to stay indoors. The public was warned to avoid the area as the situation remained “active” and potentially dangerous.
According to local media reports, the suspected gunman is believed to still be inside the town and may be carrying a long-arm firearm. Police shut down key locations, including a local hotel, and issued emergency alerts advising residents to remain inside their homes. Heavily armed tactical police units were mobilised from neighbouring districts, with specialist teams tasked with containing and neutralising the threat.
Preliminary information suggests the shooting may be linked to a domestic violence incident, though investigators have stressed that the motive has not yet been confirmed. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and that all lines of inquiry are being pursued.
The incident has heightened national concern as it comes against the backdrop of the devastating mass shooting at Bondi Beach in December 2025, where 15 people were killed during a Jewish festival. Notably, the Lake Cargelligo shooting took place on Australia’s National Day of Mourning for the Bondi victims, adding to the emotional weight of the tragedy.
Just a day earlier, the Australian Parliament had passed new anti-hate speech and gun-related legislation in response to the Bondi Beach attack. Welcoming the move, Anthony Albanese said the country had acted with urgency and unity to confront both extremism and the misuse of firearms.
Australia is internationally known for its strict gun control laws, enacted after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. However, the latest shooting has once again raised questions about enforcement, community safety in rural areas, and the persistent threat of gun violence despite tight regulations.
As night fell, Lake Cargelligo remained under heavy police presence, with residents confined indoors and authorities promising regular updates as the operation continues. Officials have urged the public to remain calm and follow police instructions until the threat is fully neutralised.
