Handshake Row: Vaughan, Cook React to IND-PAK

The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry has once again drawn attention — this time over a handshake controversy following recent matches.

After India’s clash with Pakistan at the T20 World Cup 2026, the absence of a customary post-match handshake between players sparked debate among fans and former cricketers.

The issue reportedly began during last year’s Asia Cup when India captain Suryakumar Yadav did not shake hands with Pakistan players. The decision was linked to paying respect to victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and expressing solidarity with the Indian Army after Operation Sindoor. The move drew mixed reactions, with some former overseas players criticising it, while several former Indian cricketers defended the gesture.

The discussion resurfaced after the two teams met again in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

England Legends Weigh In

Former England captain Michael Vaughan, along with Alastair Cook, Phil Tufnell and David Lloyd, discussed the issue on a cricket podcast.

Phil Tufnell suggested that, from a cricketing perspective, India currently appear stronger than Pakistan. He described the contest as uneven, stating that India look the more dominant side at present.

Michael Vaughan said Pakistan often appear under pressure when facing India. He also expressed disappointment over the handshake controversy, describing the situation as “sad” in the context of the spirit of the game.

However, Alastair Cook offered a different perspective. He questioned whether the tension is as serious as it appears publicly. Cook suggested that players may interact normally away from the field and that the visible rivalry might be more symbolic during matches.

“It might only be for show,” Cook indicated, hinting that relations between players could be more cordial behind closed doors.

Focus on Cricket

Despite the controversy, both teams continue to compete in the T20 World Cup 2026, where India have maintained a strong record in recent encounters.

The India-Pakistan rivalry remains one of the most closely watched fixtures in international cricket, often carrying emotional and political undertones beyond the sport itself.

While opinions differ on the handshake issue, former players largely agree that cricketing performance should remain the central focus during global tournaments.
