A 22-year-old Indian-origin postgraduate student, Saketh Sreenivasaiah, who was reported missing in the United States last week, has been found dead, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco stated that local authorities had recovered his body and informed the family. The Consulate said it is in touch with his parents and will provide all necessary assistance, including support for repatriation procedures.

Sreenivasaiah was pursuing a Master of Science degree at the University of California, Berkeley. He had reportedly been missing since Monday.

Body Recovered from Lake

According to local authorities, the body was recovered from Lake Anza in California after a multi-day search operation. The search reportedly involved divers, sonar equipment and drones.

Officials from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office located the body shortly after 2 pm local time and began recovery procedures. Further details regarding the cause of death have not been officially released.

Personal Belongings Found

Local media reports said the student’s backpack, containing his passport and laptop, was found earlier in a neighbourhood in the Park Hills area. Authorities have not publicly commented on how the belongings were separated from him.

Investigations are ongoing. Officials have not indicated any signs of foul play at this stage.

Roommate’s Statement

In a social media post cited by local media, a person identified as Sreenivasaiah’s roommate said the student’s behaviour had changed in recent weeks.

According to the post, he had appeared withdrawn and less engaged. The roommate reportedly said he did not initially interpret the change as serious. These remarks have not been independently verified by authorities.

Academic Background

Sreenivasaiah was originally from Karnataka, India.

According to his public academic profile, he completed his BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras with a CGPA of 8.41. He had earlier studied at BASE PU College and Sri Vani Education Centre, where he scored 96.5% in his Class 10 examinations.

On his profile, he described his academic interests as focused on deep technology innovations in advanced materials and semiconductors.

Consulate’s Response

In its official communication, the Indian Consulate expressed condolences and said it would continue coordinating with local authorities. It assured that all necessary support would be extended to the bereaved family.
