IndiGo Flight Reaches Delhi Minutes Before Iran Shuts Airspace, Last Non-Iranian Plane to Pass Through

A Delhi-bound flight operated by IndiGo narrowly escaped disruption after passing through Iranian airspace just minutes before authorities in Iran abruptly shut down most of their skies amid escalating unrest.

The flight, which departed from Tbilisi late Wednesday night, crossed Iranian airspace in the early hours of Thursday and landed safely in New Delhi shortly after 7 am, according to real-time aviation tracking data. It is believed to have been the last non-Iranian commercial aircraft airborne before Tehran issued an emergency notice closing large sections of its airspace.

The sudden shutdown followed intensified protests across Iran and immediately disrupted international aviation operations. Only a limited number of approved flights were allowed to continue, forcing global carriers to rapidly reroute, delay, or cancel services.

Indian airlines were among those affected. IndiGo cancelled its Mumbai–Tbilisi services scheduled for Friday, while Air India and SpiceJet issued advisories warning passengers of potential delays and cancellations on routes traditionally passing over Iran. Airlines said alternative routing options could significantly increase travel time and operational costs.

Iran’s airspace plays a crucial role in connecting Europe, Central Asia, and South Asia. Any unplanned closure forces airlines to take longer detours, adding hours to flights and placing pressure on airline schedules and fuel planning.

With uncertainty over when Iranian airspace may fully reopen, carriers worldwide continue to monitor the situation closely. Passengers have been advised to stay alert to airline updates and confirm flight statuses before travel.
