Iran Protests Enter Second Week: President Pezeshkian Blames U.S., Israel; Tehran Issues Stark Warning

Iran’s nationwide protests entered their second week on Sunday as President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of orchestrating unrest to destabilise the Islamic Republic. Addressing the nation, Mr. Pezeshkian alleged that foreign powers were attempting to “sow chaos and disorder” by fuelling riots and urged citizens to distance themselves from what he described as “rioters and terrorists.”

The protests, triggered by economic hardship and rising living costs, have evolved into a direct challenge to Iran’s ruling theocracy. Activist groups report that at least 116 people have been killed in violence linked to the demonstrations, while a Norway-based rights organisation has placed the death toll as high as 192. Verification remains difficult amid a nationwide internet blackout that has now exceeded 60 hours.

Tensions escalated further after Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that U.S. military assets and Israeli targets would be considered “legitimate targets” if Washington carries out any military action against Iran, as previously threatened by Donald Trump. Lawmakers were seen chanting anti-U.S. slogans during a heated parliamentary session.

Israel, meanwhile, voiced support for Iranian protesters. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel backs the Iranian people’s “struggle for freedom,” adding to already heightened regional tensions.

Iranian authorities have responded with arrests, with police officials confirming that “significant” detentions of alleged protest leaders were made overnight. President Pezeshkian struck a mixed tone, saying the government is willing to listen to genuine public grievances but would not tolerate violence or attempts to destabilise the state.
