Is Kalonji a Weight Loss Miracle? Expert Explains

AIIMS-trained gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi explains whether kalonji aids weight loss and how much is safe to consume daily.

Is Kalonji a Weight Loss Miracle? Expert Explains

Kalonji, also known as black seed or nigella seeds, is often promoted on social media as a natural weight loss solution. However, a medical expert says the claims need to be viewed with caution.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford, recently shared his views in a video posted on Instagram.

Not a Weight Loss Miracle

In the video, Dr Sethi clearly stated that kalonji is not a “weight loss miracle.”

While the seeds are linked to several health benefits, he said they cannot replace core strategies such as maintaining a calorie deficit, regular exercise and a balanced diet.

According to him, expectations around rapid fat loss through kalonji alone are unrealistic.

Documented Health Benefits

Dr Sethi explained that black seeds may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. He also said there is evidence that they can improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar.

He added that kalonji has shown potential benefits in reducing inflammation and easing joint pain. Some trials involving rheumatoid arthritis patients have indicated improvement in inflammatory markers.

The seeds may also offer support for people dealing with asthma and seasonal allergies. In addition, they are known to be rich in antioxidants.

Caution on Dosage

Despite the potential benefits, Dr Sethi warned against excessive consumption.

He said kalonji can be toxic in very high doses and should not be taken without limits. While laboratory studies suggest possible protective effects on the liver and kidneys, he noted that much of this data remains experimental.

How Much Is Safe?

For regular use, Dr Sethi recommended half to one teaspoon daily. He said the seeds can be safely incorporated into cooking in moderate amounts.

He emphasised that kalonji should be viewed as a supportive ingredient rather than a standalone solution for weight management.

Important Note

The expert’s comments were shared on social media and are intended for general information. Individuals should consult qualified healthcare professionals before making significant dietary changes.

In short, kalonji may offer metabolic and anti-inflammatory benefits, but it is not a shortcut to weight loss
