The rapid rise of artificial intelligence startups has created a new wave of high-earning professionals. Along with financial success, some millennials in the tech sector are rethinking how they approach money and marriage.
One such example is Gujari Singh, an OpenAI employee, who has said she will not get married without signing a prenuptial agreement.
Prenup as a Condition
In an interview with The New York Times, Singh, 31, described a prenuptial agreement as “non-negotiable” before marriage.
She joined OpenAI in 2023 and works in the company’s sales team. According to the report, her annual income ranges between $200,000 and $300,000, which converts to more than ₹2 crore at the lower end. She also holds equity in the company.
Singh said she believes her current earnings are only the beginning of her career growth. She added that financial independence is important to her and that she wants to protect the assets she builds over time.
Changing Views on Wealth
Singh noted that a former partner became more open to signing a prenuptial agreement after she began working at OpenAI.
She said her stance is influenced by concerns about financial control and independence, especially for women. According to her, the idea of not being in control of her own finances is something she wants to avoid.
Industry Perspective
Experts quoted in the report suggested that prenuptial agreements are common among professionals in the tech industry, particularly those receiving equity-based compensation.
Lauren Lavender, chief marketing officer at HelloPrenup, said it is not unusual for tech professionals to seek such agreements. She noted that equity packages can sometimes exceed base salaries in value.
Sam Mockford of Citrine Capital said that when wealth is tied to equity, future earnings can be uncertain. He described prenuptial agreements as a way to plan for different possible financial outcomes.
AI Wealth and Relationship Conversations
As AI companies continue to grow, many employees are receiving higher pay packages and stock-based compensation. This shift is influencing conversations about financial planning, risk and long-term security.
While views on prenuptial agreements vary widely, the discussion reflects broader changes in how young professionals in the tech industry approach marriage and money.
