External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, with the two leaders reviewing cooperation in trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear power.
The meeting came during Jaishankar’s two-day Russia visit and ahead of major engagements, including the SCO summit and the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Jaishankar said India-Russia economic cooperation had grown significantly and that both sides had received a positive report on their broader partnership.
Putin said Russia was increasing fertiliser supplies to India and remained ready to meet the needs of Indian farmers. He also noted that bilateral trade had returned to growth this year after a slight decline previously.
Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings and a personal message to Putin. Modi is expected to meet Putin at the upcoming SCO summit before hosting him in New Delhi for the BRICS Summit.
Earlier, Jaishankar held talks with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. He said bilateral trade had risen nearly four-fold over five years, from around USD 13 billion in 2021-22 to almost USD 60 billion in 2025-26.
However, the trade imbalance has widened sharply, growing from USD 6.6 billion to more than USD 50 billion. Jaishankar said India would prioritise better market access, fewer trade barriers and stronger payment mechanisms as both countries target USD 100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
