Mexico Erupts After El Mencho Killed in Raid

After cartel leader El Mencho was killed in a military raid, violence spread across Mexico with roadblocks, arson attacks and flight disruptions.

Mexico Erupts After El Mencho Killed in Raid

Mexico witnessed widespread unrest after the reported killing of Nemesio Oseguera, also known as El Mencho, the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

According to officials, Oseguera, 60, died in custody after being injured during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. The operation was reportedly carried out by Mexican special forces with intelligence support from the United States. His body was later transported to Mexico City under heavy security.

Coordinated Retaliation Across States

Within hours of the operation, multiple states reported violent incidents. Authorities said armed men believed to be loyal to the cartel set vehicles on fire, blocked highways and attacked businesses.

Roadblocks were reported in several regions, including Jalisco, Guanajuato, Colima and Aguascalientes. In some areas, public transport was suspended and residents were advised to stay indoors as a precaution.

Security sources described the incidents as a coordinated show of force following the cartel leader’s death.

Flights Cancelled, Tourism Hit

Air travel was disrupted as airlines including Air Canada, United Airlines and Aeromexico cancelled flights to Puerto Vallarta. Videos shared online showed smoke rising near the coastal resort, alarming tourists.

Hotel guests in some parts of Jalisco were advised to remain inside. Trucking groups reportedly told drivers to avoid key routes until conditions improved.

Arrests and Military Deployment

In Guanajuato, officials reported dozens of incidents across multiple municipalities and said several arrests had been made. By evening, authorities claimed the situation was largely under control.

Images circulating on social media showed armored vehicles moving through residential areas and security forces patrolling highways.

Authorities stated that no civilian deaths had been reported in connection with the retaliatory violence, apart from cartel members and security personnel involved in the initial operation.

Warning of Internal Power Struggle

A person identified by Reuters as a member of the cartel allegedly described the attacks as revenge for Oseguera’s death and warned of possible internal clashes as factions attempt to take control.

If confirmed, such internal disputes could lead to further instability in regions where the cartel operates.

Political Reactions

US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said on social media that retaliation was not unexpected but urged resolve against criminal groups.

In Washington, President Donald Trump’s administration described the killing as a significant blow to organized crime.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the unrest but maintained that daily life was continuing normally in most parts of the country.

Pattern of Violent Backlash

Mexico has experienced similar waves of violence after high-profile arrests or killings of cartel leaders.

The 2019 detention and release of Ovidio Guzman, son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, led to major gun battles in Culiacán. His re-arrest in 2023 again triggered unrest. The 2024 capture of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada also resulted in internal conflict within the Sinaloa Cartel.

The latest developments highlight the ongoing challenges Mexico faces in tackling powerful criminal organizations that operate across multiple states.

As security forces work to restore order, concerns remain about potential further reprisals or internal power struggles within the cartel.
