Modi Lists 3 Reform Goals for Next Decade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday outlined three key reform priorities for India over the next decade, saying the government will continue focusing on long-term structural changes as the country moves towards its “Viksit Bharat” goal.

In an interview with PTI, Modi said the next phase of reforms will centre on structural reforms, deeper innovation, and further simplification of governance.

Structural Reforms to Boost Competitiveness

The Prime Minister said India will continue reforms aimed at improving productivity and global competitiveness.

According to him, the government has moved beyond incremental policy adjustments to systemic transformation. He said reforms are designed to benefit citizens and businesses in a meaningful way.

Modi added that infrastructure expansion and productive capital expenditure remain central to the government’s economic strategy. He said infrastructure projects are being planned with long-term needs in mind.

Focus on Innovation and Technology

The second priority, Modi said, is deepening innovation across technology, manufacturing and services.

Highlighting India’s digital transformation, he pointed to reforms in digital payments through the UPI platform as an example of structural change. He described India as a digital leader and said data centres would play a major role in job creation in the coming years.

He also said the country is inviting global data infrastructure investments and building capacity to support long-term growth.

Simpler Governance for Ease of Doing Business

The third focus area, according to the Prime Minister, is simplifying governance.

He said the goal is to make it easier for citizens and businesses to operate with greater trust and efficiency.

Modi emphasised that economic policy reforms are intended to prepare India for sustained growth over the next 25 years.

Trade, Private Sector and Women’s Role

On trade policy, Modi said free trade agreements are aimed at expanding market access for small and medium enterprises in sectors such as textiles, leather, chemicals and handicrafts.

He also stressed that the private sector will play a critical role in achieving the vision of a developed India. According to him, bold investments in innovation and capacity building will be essential.

The Prime Minister further said women will play a central role in India’s development journey.

Congress Criticism

The Congress party criticised the interview, calling it a “scripted” exercise. Party leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that it was aimed at diverting attention from criticism over the Union Budget and trade policy issues.

The ruling government has not responded in detail to the criticism so far.
