A tragic accident unfolded in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon after a portion of an under-construction metro pillar collapsed in the Mulund area, leaving one person dead and four others injured.
The incident occurred around 12:15 pm on the busy LBS Road near the Johnson & Johnson factory in Mulund. According to officials, a segment from an elevated metro structure fell from a height onto a passing auto-rickshaw, triggering panic in the area.
What Happened
In an official statement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said that a parapet segment detached from the under-construction metro corridor and struck a moving vehicle below.
Initial reports indicated two people were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. However, updated information confirmed that one person succumbed to injuries while four others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased.
Immediate Response
Emergency services, including local police, fire brigade personnel and disaster management teams, reached the site shortly after the collapse. Traffic movement on LBS Road was temporarily disrupted as rescue and relief operations were carried out.
The MMRDA stated that the metro project team is present at the site and working in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and disaster management authorities to secure the area.
“All necessary medical assistance is being extended to the injured, and their condition is being closely monitored,” the authority said in its statement.
Investigation Underway
Officials have initiated a preliminary inquiry into the cause of the structural failure. The exact reason behind the collapse of the parapet segment is yet to be determined.
Construction safety norms and structural integrity protocols are expected to come under scrutiny following the incident. Authorities are also assessing whether additional sections of the under-construction corridor pose any risk.
Concerns Over Metro Construction Safety
The accident has once again raised concerns about safety measures at major infrastructure sites in metropolitan cities. Mumbai has been undergoing rapid metro expansion over the past few years to ease traffic congestion and improve public transport connectivity.
While such projects are crucial for urban mobility, incidents involving falling debris or structural collapse have intensified public demand for stricter safety compliance and oversight.
Further details are awaited as officials continue their investigation.
