IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional Rs 300 crore to the institute’s Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology. The latest pledge takes his total contribution to the medical school project to Rs 400 crore.
Gangwal had donated Rs 100 crore in 2022 to support IIT Kanpur’s plan to establish a medical school. His new commitment includes a matching grant of up to Rs 300 crore, under which he will match contributions from other donors.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging IIT Kanpur alumni, philanthropists and other supporters to contribute to the project. Gangwal said he was honoured to be part of an institution designed to bring medical education, research, engineering and technology together.
IIT Kanpur plans to develop a 500-bed super-speciality hospital and a 200-bed cancer care research centre as part of the project. The proposed facilities will support medical education, clinical research and advanced healthcare delivery.
The medical school is also expected to create opportunities for doctors, engineers and researchers to collaborate on medical technology, diagnostics, artificial intelligence and clinical innovation.
IIT Kanpur Director Professor Manindra Agrawal said Gangwal’s earlier contribution helped set the project in motion. He added that the latest pledge could help the institute move closer to realising its healthcare vision.
The matching-grant model could significantly expand funding for the project if more donors participate. It also highlights IIT Kanpur’s broader effort to combine its engineering expertise with healthcare and biomedical research.
