Losing belly fat is one of the most common — and most frustrating — fitness goals people set, especially at the start of a new year. While many feel demotivated by slow results, fitness experts say the problem often lies not in effort, but in unrealistic expectations.
According to Rishabh Telang, fitness expert and founder of Cult Fit, belly fat loss is absolutely possible — but only when approached with the right mindset and sustainable habits.
“There is no such thing as spot reduction,” Telang explains. “Belly fat reduces only when overall body fat reduces.”
The reality check before you begin
Belly fat tends to be stubborn because it’s often the last place the body lets go of stored fat. Crash diets, endless crunches, and quick fixes only lead to burnout. Instead, Telang suggests focusing on consistency, awareness, and long-term behaviour change.
Here are the four realistic hacks he recommends:
1️⃣ Move your body consistently
Movement is the foundation of fat loss. Telang suggests a mix of strength training and cardio, but emphasises that consistency matters more than perfection.
“Find something you enjoy. Any movement is better than no movement,” he says.
Whether it’s gym workouts, walking, yoga, or dance — staying active daily is key.
2️⃣ Eat smart, not extreme
Rather than cutting entire food groups, Telang recommends building balanced meals:
-
Lean protein in every meal
-
Plenty of vegetables and fruits
-
Healthy fats from nuts and seeds
A simple but powerful rule: eat until satisfied, not stuffed.
3️⃣ Eat slowly (the ‘elite-level’ habit)
This habit, according to Telang, is a game changer.
Eating slowly and chewing properly helps the body recognise hunger and fullness signals, preventing overeating without strict calorie counting.
“It teaches your body to listen to biological hunger cues,” he explains.
4️⃣ Be your own scientist
This is Telang’s favourite rule. Instead of quitting when results stall, tweak intelligently:
-
Reduce portion sizes by 10–15%, or
-
Increase daily activity slightly
Track what works for your body. Small experiments help build long-term success.
“Trial and error is part of the process,” he adds. “That’s how you understand your body.”
The takeaway
Belly fat loss isn’t about punishing workouts or restrictive diets. It’s about patience, consistency, and smart habits that you can sustain for life.
