Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a sharp attack on Rahul Gandhi over his recent remarks on the Manusmriti, accusing the Leader of the Opposition of insulting India’s traditions and heritage.
Speaking at a programme in Raebareli, Adityanath said Gandhi had a greater responsibility as the Leader of the Opposition and was accountable to the country’s democratic institutions. He accused Gandhi of taking an oath under the Constitution while allegedly criticising India’s cultural traditions.
The chief minister also referred to Gandhi’s previous statements on issues related to the Indian Army, terrorism, Lord Ram and the Emergency, accusing him of failing to play what he described as a constructive role in the Opposition.
Adityanath’s remarks came after Gandhi, during an interaction with girl students in Maharashtra, criticised what he called the “Manusmriti mindset” and urged them to challenge patriarchy. Gandhi said women belonged to themselves and should not be viewed as belonging to their fathers, husbands or sons.
Responding to those comments, Adityanath questioned Gandhi’s understanding of Manu and India’s ancient traditions. He suggested that historical and religious texts should be studied to understand the subject in greater detail.
The Uttar Pradesh chief minister also accused Gandhi of distancing himself from his responsibilities as Leader of the Opposition. He questioned why Gandhi allegedly wanted to undermine India’s heritage and linked his criticism to broader concerns over the country’s future.
The exchange adds to the continuing political confrontation between the ruling party and the Opposition over issues involving culture, history, heritage and social values.
