The protest at IIT Delhi continued after students rejected the institute’s response to demands raised following the death of MSc Physics student Rishikesh Kumar on August 22. Students described the administration’s response as inadequate and said demonstrations would continue until their concerns were properly addressed.
According to the minutes of a meeting held at the Lecture Hall Complex on August 24, students raised objections to the administration’s account of the case. They argued that the response focused largely on Kumar’s medical history while failing to adequately reflect concerns and statements shared by his mother, friends and students from the Physics Department.
The protesting students have demanded greater accountability and a more comprehensive response from the IIT Delhi administration. They said the concerns surrounding how Kumar’s issues were handled needed to be examined more closely.
The agitation intensified as more than 300 students gathered outside the Director’s office, raising slogans and demanding the immediate acceptance of their demands. Students said they were dissatisfied with the institute’s response and remained firm on continuing the protest.
Classes at the institute have remained suspended amid the ongoing unrest, adding to pressure on the administration to engage with the students and address the issues raised by them.
The protest has drawn attention to student welfare, institutional accountability and the handling of mental health concerns on university campuses. As discussions between students and the administration continue, the situation at IIT Delhi remains tense, with protesters insisting that meaningful action is needed before they call off their agitation.
