H1N1 Alert in Delhi: Education Department Issues New Guidelines for Schools

The Delhi Directorate of Education has issued fresh guidelines for schools to strengthen awareness, prevention and preparedness against seasonal influenza and H1N1, commonly known as swine flu. The advisory applies to government, government-aided and private unaided recognised schools across the national capital.

The Education Department said there is no need for undue alarm but stressed the importance of timely awareness and responsible preventive practices. Schools have been asked to promote respiratory hygiene and educate students and staff about symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body ache, fatigue, headache, chills and breathing difficulties.

Under the “Healthy School – Healthy Community” approach, schools have been directed to encourage regular handwashing, proper cough and sneeze etiquette and the safe disposal of used tissues. The advisory also recommends maintaining distance from people showing respiratory symptoms, while masks may be used where necessary.

Schools have also been asked to regularly clean classrooms, common areas and frequently touched surfaces. Adequate ventilation should be maintained wherever feasible, while students and staff have been encouraged to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth unnecessarily.

The department has further advised people against self-medication, stating that antibiotics or other medicines should not be taken without medical advice. Schools must spread awareness through assemblies, classrooms, notice boards, parent communication channels and digital platforms.

District and zonal officials have been directed to monitor compliance and submit compiled reports by August 31, 2026.
