IIT Kanpur to Launch Super-Speciality Medical Degrees Before MBBS
IIT Kanpur plans to begin higher medical and super-speciality programmes before launching MBBS, with a 500-bed hospital expected to open by March 2027.
IIT Kanpur is preparing to expand into medical education, but its initial programmes will focus on higher medical and super-speciality degrees rather than MBBS. The institute has said an MBBS programme could still be three to four years away as it develops the required clinical infrastructure, faculty and hospital facilities.
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is being developed alongside the 500-bed Yadupati Singhania Super-speciality Hospital. The hospital is expected to be inaugurated by the end of 2026 and begin treating patients by March 2027. A 50-bed Cancer Care and Research Centre is also being developed on the campus.
The institute has received initial approval to recruit 60 additional faculty members for its medical and clinical research expansion. Its proposed programmes are expected to combine medical education with engineering and technology research.
Dean Anil K. Lalwani, who heads the Gangwal School, has outlined a model focused on creating specialists and promoting collaboration between medicine and engineering. The institute also plans to develop transdisciplinary research programmes at the intersection of healthcare and technology.
IIT Kanpur’s move comes as other IITs, including IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur, expand their involvement in medical education and healthcare research. However, IIT Kanpur’s immediate focus remains on establishing higher medical education and clinical infrastructure before launching undergraduate MBBS training.
