LSR Shifts Classes Online After Kalkaji Gang-Rape Case
Lady Shri Ram College has shifted classes online after an alleged gang rape near its back gate triggered concerns over student safety and security.
Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) has shifted classes online after suspending physical classes following the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir. The park is close to the college’s back gate, prompting concerns over the safety of students and staff.
The college suspended classes from noon on Tuesday and moved Wednesday’s classes online as a precaution. LSR principal Kanika K Ahuja said the administration was coordinating with Delhi Police and had requested increased patrolling in the lanes near the back gate and surrounding parks. Faculty mentors and the college counsellor were also asked to remain available for students needing support.
The LSR Students’ Union said the incident had left many students shaken and called for stronger, location-specific safety measures. It has sought attention to vulnerable stretches around educational institutions, including routes connecting campuses with Metro stations, bus stops, paying guest accommodations and markets.
Police said three men allegedly posed as policemen before separating the teenager from her male friend at the park. All three accused were subsequently arrested. One accused, identified as Asif, allegedly opened fire at police during an attempt to apprehend him near DM Office Road in Amar Colony. Police said a bullet struck a head constable’s bulletproof jacket before Asif was shot in the leg.
The incident has intensified discussions around security near the college perimeter, with LSR seeking greater police presence around the campus and nearby areas.
