RBI Launches UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI AI Platform: What Users Need to Know
RBI has announced UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI, introducing NFC-based payments and AI-powered support features for UPI users.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced two new UPI features aimed at making digital payments faster and improving customer support. The new services, UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI, an AI-powered UPI help platform, were announced by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai.

UPI Tap & Pay will allow users with NFC-enabled smartphones to make payments at compatible point-of-sale terminals by unlocking their phones and tapping them on the machine. The feature is designed to simplify payments at physical stores and reduce the steps required to complete a transaction.

The phone does not need an active mobile internet connection for the payment. Instead, the transaction can use the internet connectivity of the POS terminal. The feature will support multiple types of UPI-linked accounts, including RuPay Credit Card on UPI.

For transactions of up to Rs 5,000, users will be able to make payments without entering a UPI PIN. For payments above Rs 5,000, the UPI PIN will be required on the POS terminal.

The latest facility builds on NPCI's earlier introduction of UPI Biometric Authentication. The combined number of biometric-authenticated UPI transactions had crossed 6.29 billion as of August 31, 2026.

Alongside Tap & Pay, the RBI announced MyUPI, also referred to as UPI Help 2.0. The platform uses NPCI's Small Language Model, FiMI, to provide payment-related assistance while giving users greater visibility and control over their transactions.

MyUPI will offer users a consolidated view of UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across different banks and UPI applications. It will also include tools focused on payment safety, transaction management and complaint resolution.

One of the key features is the Safety Switch, which will allow users to request that UPI debit transactions be declined if they believe their account has been compromised. Another feature, UPI Number Delink, will allow users to disconnect their mobile number from receiving UPI payments.

The platform will also provide Payee Context-based Information, giving users additional details about a beneficiary before they authorise a payment. This is intended to help users make more informed decisions, especially when sending money to unfamiliar recipients.

MyUPI will introduce Automated Chargeback Processing for eligible transactions, enabling real-time creation of chargebacks. The facility is aimed at speeding up complaint resolution and improving operational efficiency for banks.

Another feature, Transaction Replay, will allow users to recall and repeat previous transactions through any UPI app. The platform will also provide round-the-clock multilingual support and self-service options.

The two new features address different stages of the UPI payment process. Tap & Pay is focused on making physical-store payments quicker through NFC-enabled phones and simplified authentication for smaller transactions.

MyUPI, meanwhile, is focused on providing users with greater control and assistance before and after payments, including payee information, fraud-related controls and eligible dispute resolution.

The announcements mark another expansion of the UPI ecosystem, which has increasingly incorporated features such as biometric authentication, credit card payments, AutoPay and AI-powered assistance alongside conventional digital payments.
