A powerful explosion tore through the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Dwijen Mondal in Baruipur, West Bengal, on Friday, leaving the ground floor of the house severely damaged and affecting several nearby properties.
The blast took place in the Lalpol area of Baruipur Uttarbhag, triggering panic among residents and leading to a political controversy after local BJP workers alleged that bombs had been stored at the TMC leader’s residence.
Police have not confirmed the presence of explosives. Their preliminary assessment is that the explosion may have been caused by a cooking gas cylinder. No casualties have been reported in the incident so far.
The intensity of the blast almost completely destroyed the ground floor of Mondal’s house. Nearby homes were also reportedly damaged by the impact.
Police and fire brigade teams reached the location after being alerted and secured the area as investigators began examining the site.
Baruipur SDPO Atish Biswas said it was too early to establish the exact cause of the explosion. He said investigators were primarily considering the possibility of a cylinder blast while also checking the debris for any remaining cylinder.
The fire brigade has inspected the damaged premises, while experts are expected to examine the site in greater detail before reaching a conclusion about what triggered the explosion.
The incident has led to a political dispute in the area, with local BJP workers holding protests and alleging that bombs were being manufactured or stored at Mondal’s residence.
Some residents also made allegations about purported illegal activities at the premises and claimed that explosives had allegedly been stockpiled there. They further alleged that the material was intended to target BJP workers in the locality.
These claims have not been independently established, and police have not confirmed that bombs or other explosives were present inside the house.
