Wipro AI Push Delivers Productivity Equivalent to 20,000 Workers
Wipro says its AI initiatives have generated productivity equivalent to 20,000 employees, with affected workers being redeployed and more than 100,000 trained in AI.
Wipro’s artificial intelligence initiatives have generated productivity equivalent to the work of around 20,000 employees, according to the company’s chief technology officer. The employees whose capacity has been freed up have been redeployed within the IT services firm rather than directly replaced by AI systems.
Wipro, which had around 243,000 employees in June, is moving towards what it calls a “human-AI operating model”. More than 100,000 employees are being trained and certified in advanced AI skills as the company prepares its workforce for greater collaboration with AI systems.
The company is also expanding its pool of engineers who work directly with clients to accelerate AI adoption. While Wipro has not disclosed a specific target, its forward-deployed workforce is expected to be broadly comparable with those of other major Indian IT companies.
The shift comes as India’s software services sector adapts to AI-driven changes in hiring, software development and client contracts. TCS has indicated that it expects its workforce to increasingly operate alongside AI agents, while Infosys and TCS are also expanding specialised AI engineering teams.
Wipro’s CTO said the focus should move beyond measuring productivity to assessing whether AI improves customer experience, generates new revenue and delivers business outcomes.
However, Wipro remains less mature in AI monetisation than some rivals and does not disclose AI-related revenue. Analysts say the key test will be whether its AI investments eventually translate into stronger revenue and profit margins.
