BNP Crosses 200 Seats in Bangladesh Polls

Bangladesh Election 2026 results: BNP crosses 200 seats as Tarique Rahman set to take oath. Jamaat raises concerns over result process.

BNP Crosses 200 Seats in Bangladesh Polls

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has crossed the 200-seat mark in the 2026 parliamentary elections, according to multiple local media reports. Final confirmation from the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) is still awaited as counting continues in a few constituencies.

As of late morning on Friday, BNP had reportedly secured 208 seats out of 299 contested constituencies. The simple majority mark in parliament is 150.

Oath Ceremony Likely on Saturday

Media reports suggest that Rahman, 60, is likely to take oath as Prime Minister on Saturday. Visuals from the Bangladesh Parliament indicate preparations for the swearing-in ceremony.

Rahman returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years in self-imposed exile in London. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and is set to become the first elected Prime Minister since the 2024 political transition that led to the removal of Sheikh Hasina.

Voter Turnout at 59.44%

The Election Commission reported an overall voter turnout of 59.44% for Thursday’s parliamentary elections and the concurrent national referendum.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah described the poll as “historic” and thanked political parties, media, security personnel and voters for their participation. He said the Commission aimed to conduct a transparent and impartial election.

However, results in three constituencies — Sherpur-2, Chittagong-2 and Chittagong-4 — have reportedly been postponed due to pending court cases.

Jamaat Raises Concerns

The rival Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies have raised concerns about the result announcement process. Party representatives alleged delays and possible irregularities, claiming “inconsistencies” in unofficial figures.

Jamaat leaders stated they are not satisfied with the process and have asked supporters to remain patient while awaiting official updates. The Election Commission has not publicly responded to these specific allegations.

Women Candidates and Key Wins

Reports indicate that at least seven women candidates have secured victories so far. Out of 1,981 total candidates in the election, 78 were women.

Among the winners are BNP candidates Afroza Khanam Rita (Manikganj-3), Tahsina Rushdir Luna (Sylhet-2), Farzana Sharmin (Natore-1), Shama Obaid Islam (Faridpur-2), and Nayab Yusuf Ahmed (Faridpur-3). Independent and alliance-backed candidates also secured seats in other constituencies.

The EC has yet to release a complete official list of winners.

International Reactions

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rahman on leading the BNP to what he described as a decisive victory. In a post on X, Modi said India would continue supporting a “democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh” and expressed hope for stronger bilateral ties.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari also extended congratulations, expressing interest in strengthening relations.

The US Embassy in Dhaka congratulated the people of Bangladesh and the BNP on what it called a “historic victory”.

What Next for Sheikh Hasina?

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remains in New Delhi after being ousted in 2024. Her party, the Awami League, is currently banned from contesting elections.

BNP had earlier campaigned on issues related to governance and accountability, including references to Hasina’s tenure. It remains to be seen how the new government will approach diplomatic and legal matters linked to her case.

Road Ahead

With counting nearing completion, BNP appears set to form the next government with a clear parliamentary majority. The party has stated it will avoid large victory rallies and instead hold prayer gatherings.

Final official results from the Election Commission are expected soon.

As Bangladesh enters a new political chapter, attention now shifts to the formation of the new cabinet and the policy direction under Rahman’s leadership.
