China Fireworks Explosion Kills 12 in Hubei

An explosion at a fireworks-related facility in central China has left 12 people dead, according to Chinese state media reports.

The blast took place around 2 pm local time on Wednesday in Zhengji town, located in Xiangyang city of Hubei province. The incident occurred during the ongoing Lunar New Year celebrations, a period when fireworks are widely used across the country.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that the explosion impacted an area of approximately 50 square metres. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the site.

Officials reportedly brought the fire under control by around 3:30 pm local time. Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the explosion.

Second Incident in Days

This marks the second reported fireworks-related blast in China within days.

On Sunday, a similar incident in eastern Jiangsu province resulted in eight fatalities and injuries to two others, according to international media reports citing local authorities.

The back-to-back incidents have raised fresh safety concerns during the festive period.

Government Warning

Earlier this week, Chinese authorities reportedly warned about the risks associated with fireworks during the Spring Festival period, which coincides with Lunar New Year celebrations.

Officials described fireworks as one of the major safety hazards during the festival season, urging caution.

Investigation Underway

Local authorities are expected to conduct an investigation into the cause of the Hubei explosion. No additional details about victims or property damage have been released so far.

China has strict regulations around the production, storage and sale of fireworks. However, accidents occasionally occur, especially during peak festive periods when demand increases.

As of now, emergency response operations have concluded at the site, and officials are assessing the situation. Further updates are awaited.
